Pier 28 Habano- The West Coast Cigar

The Pier 28 Habano cigar line was created by Tim Wong a west coast territory manager for Espinosa Premium Cigars. The cigars were originally created for Mr. Wong’s territories in the west coast, but are now getting national recognition. The cigar has an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, Nicaraguan binder, and a blended filler of Dominican and Nicaraguan tobacco.  The strength of the cigar depends on the smoker as it can come off as medium for some and medium to full for others. The flavor profile is interesting as it changes as the cigar burns. The flavors you can get at the beginning are black tea, fruit, wood, and some pepper. As the cigar heats up the fruit dies down, the pepper comes in more, and you will get an earthy finish.

For me this cigar is a great example of a boutique cigar that brings with it an interesting complexity to it. I enjoy the kick you get from the Habano wrapper and being a blended cigar with a flavor profile that changes as it heats up. When thinking about how to pair this cigar with an experience it becomes tough because there is quite a bit I feel the cigar pairs well with. If you have been following me you know I am going to have a whiskey with this cigar, but due to the complexity and changing flavor profile this cigar has, will go well with many different kinds of spirits. Leaf Sumatra wrap by Oscar- Perfect morning cigar

Leaf by Oscar is made in Honduras and comes with four different kinds of wrappers: Connecticut, Corojo, Maduro, and Sumatra. I will be reviewing specifically the Sumatra wrapper. The binder and filler is Honduran and the wrapper is an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper. Sumatra tobacco is a delicate leaf and can be hard to work with. It is my favorite wrapper for a cigar because of the flavors of sweet coffee, milk chocolate, and creaminess. The wrapper feels soft and smooth. It has a beautiful shine and the cigar’s construction could be viewed as a work of art. The tasting notes for the cigar are milk chocolate, citrus, and hints of pepper. The cigar has a nice slow burn and is very smooth. The cigar is between a mild to mild-medium strength depending on what you normally smoke.

There is no better way to start my day than with this cigar and a coffee. It also goes great with a smooth whiskey, preferably rye. The leaf cigar is the cigar you will always see me start with when I open the shop. No matter my mood or energy, this cigar with a cup of coffee seems to make me happy. If you want to fully experience the Sumatra wrapper I suggest you try the lancero version of this cigar, as with this size the wrap place a larger role in the flavor profile. So if you’re looking to start your day on a high note pick up a Leaf Sumatra wrap cigar by Oscar and have it with a coffee. Great Morning!

Tabaquero Hamlet Paredes Bala – Unique size and “pick me up”

Tabaquero Hamlet Paredes Bala is a masterfully blended cigar from master roller Hamlet Paredes formally from Partaga Cigars Cuba. Hamlet is a master roller who created this unique shape called the Bala. The binder is a combination of Brazilian and Mexican tobacco. The filler is Nicaraguan with a San Andres wrapper. This cigar is a great example of a beautifully blended cigar. The strength can be characterized as either medium-full to full body. The cigar is a great example of a work of art rolled cigar, not easily accomplished. It has a nice slow burn and to go with a unique draw because of the size. The tasting notes are bold with flavors of chocolate, earth, pepper, citrus, and is not overly complex. The chocolate flavor notes remind me of a dark chocolate cake.
I like to have this cigar when in need of a pick me up. Every time I smoke this cigar I feel energized and focused. I love smoking this cigar after eating great Mexican food. Of course I like to have this cigar with either a whiskey or dark Mexican beer. One day at the shop a client was looking for a cigar to smoke while tailgating at a Raider game. I suggested this cigar by telling him “it would fire him up so he could better represent the black whole and Raider nation.”

Quesada 40th– The Spice Complex Blend

The Quesada 40th cigar is a complex blended cigar. The cigar uses an Ecuadorian wrapper, Dominican binder, and blended filler of Dominican and Nicaraguan tobacco. The tasting notes are cedar, spices, some sweetness, and floral notes. With a blended cigar the flavors or taste change as you smoke this cigar.

This cigar is a great example of a beautifully blended cigar with its complex flavors that can change as you smoke the cigar.  For me this cigar is a great cigar to have after a great meal. The Quesada 40th is a cigar I would want after having a great steak or pasta. In my opinion this cigar would pair well with a red wine, specifically a big red wine.

Mombacho Tierra Volcan- A great every day cigar.

The Tierra Volcan is an all Nicaraguan tobacco cigar. Some reviews classify the cigar as medium body, but I would say it is more mild to medium. The tasting notes are a rich sweetness, subtle earth, honeyed wood, chocolate, and just a pinch of pepper. The cigar is a nice smooth smoke with rich flavor. I dare say it is one of the more flavorful cigars (without being a flavored cigar) the Cave has. Mombacho does an excellent job with their tobacco to bring out all the wonderful complex flavors.

For me this is a cigar you have just because the day ends in Y. This cigar is a great all around cigar that works for most experiences. You can have it in the morning with your coffee, during a break in the afternoon, or end your day after a good meal with your favorite spirit. I feel it can pair with a lot of different kinds of spirits, like whiskey or bourbon, scotch, and even big red wines.

If you’re looking for a cigar and not sure what to have, pick up a Mombacho Tierra Volcan.

La Galera Connecticut- The creamy Connecticut

This cigar is a Dominican cigar with an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper. The tasting notes are almonds, creamy cedar, with other hints of dark cocoa, bitter espresso, gritty earth and grass. The wrapper does not have the characteristic slight bitterness found in a Connecticut wrapper.

I believe the cigar pairs well with a light beer or light roast coffee. The cigar is a must try for people who enjoy mild cigars. It’s a great cigar to start your day or have on the golf course. I call this the creamy Connecticut because that is the first flavor or taste I get and I am surprised by this because it is a Connecticut wrapped cigar..

This week I am reviewing the Drew Estate: Herrera Esteli. I chose the Robusto size, but we have three sizes to choose from in our humidor; Lonsdale, Robusto, and Belicoso. This blend was the brainchild of Willy Herrera, and the first he made with Drew Estate. Drew Estate’s goal was to give Willy the freedom to create his own unique style of cigars under the DE company name.

The cigar is a rich Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, with Honduran binder and Nicaraguan filler. Armed with this information I am excited for a deep spicy smoke. As my personal preference dictates I use a V cut and I light it up. At first puff I can tell I am in for a pleasurable experience. The notes are subtle in the first third, with a spicy, almost sweet draw. It is a very smooth smoke and sits well on the palate. As I’m researching this stick, I come across a Cigar Aficionado rating for it. A whopping 93! In the second third the flavors start to come out a bit more. It is still sweet and spicy, but with a light peppery undertone. I can definitely tell this smoke is on the medium to medium full side of the scale. The flavors begin to come out much more pronounced in the final third, I can taste the slight peppery tone with a sweet almost maple flavor. It’s a creamy smoke, definitely one I will have again. I am enjoying this cigar a little too much, as I smoke it down to a tiny nub.

Overall I must say I am impressed with the Herrera Esteli, The aesthetics are enough to make me feel slight nostalgia. The wrapper has a smooth, creamy look with a very slight toothiness. One stick that I will definitely be recommending to folks who come in looking for an all around great smoke at a great price.

20160315_154443_Richtone(HDR)The first thing that stands out to me is the toothy shiny wrapper. The entire Regius line is  Nicaraguan Puro (made using only Nicaraguan tobacco),and made in London.

I digress… As I light the cigar it toasts perfectly. I’m definitely excited for this experience. The first thing I taste is an excellent earthy flavor, with hints of nuttiness, and a touch of sweetness. This cigar has a Cubanesque taste to it that I am really enjoying.  The draw is smooth and the smoke is deep and creamy. I personally am a fan of the grandito size, as a lil cub anything bigger than a 50 ring gauge is just cumbersome. The earthy flavor intensifies in the second third, and I am now picking up a woody undertone as well. I am really enjoying this stick! A customer walks in and I set my cigar down to help, as I get back to it a minute or so later the smoke is out already. I guess that’s the downside to smoking a thinner stick. I would definitely recommend this to someone looking for a relaxing medium to medium full smoke!

Drew shade

In great anticipation for our upcoming Drew Estates Event, Thursday, December 10th, I would like to feature their Undercrown Shade, as the “Bear Cub Pick of the Week”.  My first experience with this particular cigar was about a month back and it is my non-infused pick in our humidor, currently.  To those of you that know this “Infused Cigar Queen”, as my Bear has dubbed me, yes, I am enjoying the expansion of a growing palate, as I peruse and partake.  <BIG GRIN>

I found this cigar to be smooth in it’s draw.  My personal choice,  a v-cut.  The body was medium that leaned more to the lighter side of the scale, in my opinion.  Loved the flavor profile with it’s toasted nuts, cream, and subtle hint of spice background.  The wrapper is an Ecuadoran Connecticut atop a Sumatran binder and Dominican Criollo 98 and Nicaraguan Corojo and Criollo long-fillers. It burned evenly and holds a nice ash.  I did not have to work to keep it lit and enjoyed it in all of its thirds.  I did note that it’s profile became more distinctive in that second third, which made it delightful to the finish.  Upon recommendation to even those that typically enjoy a more full bodied smoke, it was found to be quite the enjoyable surprise, especially as a first to early afternoon smoke of the day.

When I researched this cigars history, I discovered that it was created by the factory rollers, under the direction of Drew Estate’s master blender, Willy Herrera.  When the Liga Privada 9, was met with overwhelming popularity, the rollers were stopped from smoking up the supply.  They were then challenged by Willy to come up with a Connecticut based blend that would satisfy his particular palate, and thus the Undercrown Shade was born.

There will be several choices in size available at our Drew Estate’s Event of this amazing find.  You will not want to miss out on this cigar, Y’all!

Bear Cub Pick #4!

I know this blog started off as “weekly picks” but hey… life happens y’all!

And this ‘lil Cub was busting moves to coordinate our first Featured Cigar Manufacturer Night with Arturo Fuente Cigars!!! Hopefully some of you were awesome enough to attend 🙂 There were some fantastic cigars, wine, food, live jazz music, and great company! You can view the photo album from that night right here! For those of you who couldn’t make it, not to worry, we will have another one soon!

But, I digress. Back to the topic of interest. Cigars.

This time I’ve decided to feature the Padrón Dámaso No. 8.

I have been thoroughly enjoying these since we got them in a couple of weeks ago, and had to order two more boxes since (Thanks Alex!). It’s named after Dámaso Padrón, which is Jose O. Padrón’s grandfather who migrated to Cuba from the Canary Islands in the mid 1800’s.  The Padrón family started their own industry in Miami, FL with a mere $600 and eventually settled in Esteli, Nicaragua after surviving a factory fire, the Sandinista Rebellion, a U.S. Embargo on Nicaragua, and much more.

The Padrón Dámaso is unlike other Padrón Cigars. Although the filler is still Nicaraguan, the Dámaso is graciously distinguished by it’s Connecticut-Seed wrapper. The No. 8 is a smooth, delicious, easy smoke. Some flavors in the burn are hints of citrus, nuttiness, and cedar. Its creamy, fruity, and over-all amazing. I would consider it to be a consistently mild bodied cigar, hitting medium perhaps towards the end, but  only just barely.

Be leery, y’all, for this one is majorly addictive.
